Quests
Every quest in the game — 34 main-story quests and 60 side quests, each with its objective outline. Main quests are listed in story order.
After exploring a ruin, the protagonist heads to the rendezvous point to meet up with their friends.
Iori, a player encountered in the ruins, outlines the basics of SAO before asking the protagonist for help with an unfinished quest.
While the party looks for information about a rumored high-difficulty quest, a player named Argo offers to help—for an exorbitant fee. With no choice but to accept, Iori and the protagonist head out to slay a strange beast...
After again accepting a tough quest from Argo, the protagonist and Iori set out for an unknown cave.
The protagonist and Iori embark on yet another difficult quest. This time they are joined by a skilled player named Cal. The three of them reach Teardrop Cave, the target monster's domain.
Sword Art Online officially releases, and the protagonist heads for the Town of Beginnings.
While many players seek the safety of the Town of Beginnings, Wyzeman claims that in order to survive, the party will need to become stronger. Using knowledge gleaned from the beta test, they swiftly head northwest to Horunka.
After successfully reaching Horunka, the party accepts the quest Secret Medicine of the Forest; this will allow them to obtain the powerful early game weapon Annealed Blade. They head to West Forest in search of the quest objective: a rare item known as Little Nepenthes Ovule.
Wyzeman, moved by Diavel's words, encourages the party to make for Tolbana in the far north. However, the journey will require stronger weapons. Hoping to collect upgrade materials for this very purpose, they first head to the place Iori and the protagonist once visited with Cal—Teardrop Cave.
In Teardrop Cave, a place Iori and the protagonist previously explored alongside Cal during the beta test, the party hopes to find materials to level up the Annealed Blade. They decide to venture deeper inside the cave.
The party, having successfully leveled up the Annealed Blade, finally head for Tolbana—the town mentioned by Diavel during his rousing speech.
Diavel's secret plan was to conduct a raid—a concerted effort to try and complete the 1st Floor. However, a party of four is required to take part. Thus, Zash, a player at the strategy meeting, joins the party, and they all head to Labyrinth to take on the 1st Floor boss.
The party rushes back to the Town of Beginnings after receiving a sudden message from Saayu. Soon enough they are back on their way to the Labyrinth—albeit a touch late.
The protagonist is suddenly engulfed in darkness. They have to escape—somehow.
A brooch materializes unbidden on both Iori and the protagonist, and they obtain a mysterious quest called "The Swordsman of Salvation." A message is then received from Saayu containing shocking news—Clark has apparently died. The party heads for the northeastern hills in search of Saayu, who has since disappeared.
Choosing to keep moving forward despite the tragedies that befell their companions, the protagonist decides to proceed with the quest alongside Iori and Zash. They need to catch up to Kirito, another beta tester, on the 2nd Floor as he may be able to shed some light on the Swordsman of Salvation.
After arriving safely on the 2nd Floor, the three adventurers enter the region's main town, Urbus.
The party is reunited with Asuna in Urbus, and they ask her where they can find Kirito. Upon hearing that he went hunting for Trampling Ox, the party heads to the eastern badlands.
While the party manages to find the Trampling Ox, Kirito is nowhere to be found. On the advice of a player named Agil, they head to the wilderness in their continued search for Kirito.
Unable to gain any useful information from Kirito, the party meets a woman named Stina. She claims to be a beta tester and wears a brooch identical to theirs. They all band together to advance the Swordsman of Salvation quest, and start looking for the High Elven Ruins in earnest.
Stina is proven correct—they find a dungeon that resembles a High Elven Ruin. The party heads inside.
The protagonist is once again immersed in darkness. Escape is their only option.
The second Sanctuary's location is revealed, giving the party a new objective. They also meet a girl named Lisbeth, who guides them to Marome, a town near the Sanctuary.
Upon arrival in Marome, the party is challenged to a duel by a suspicious older player named Musoh. After the duel, he invites himself into the party and joins them in their hunt for the next Sanctuary.
The Legendary Weapon did not lead the party astray—the location holds another Sanctuary. The party resolves to clear it.
The Legendary Weapon reveals the location of the next Sanctuary. With all misunderstandings cleared up, Musoh officially joins the party and suggests that they head to Taran, a town situated close to the third Sanctuary.
After arriving safely in Taran, the party runs into Argo. She states that Lara, a famous idol active in SAO, has gone missing. The party accepts Argo's request and goes in search of Lara.
Iori and the protagonist find the cave where Lara is supposedly hidden. The party heads inside in search of the wayward idol.
Lara describes meeting a player who might have been Cal. The party, in need of Cal's help, follows directions given by a young girl named Silica to some ruins where the purple-clad player was supposedly headed.
The ruins where Cal, or his lookalike, were headed turn out to be a Sanctuary; the party prepares to clear it.
Everyone is on the verge of collapse, overcome by the endless obstacles and increasingly tough quests. Iori suggests giving up on the Swordsman of Salvation quest if they are unable to clear the next encounter. The party heads toward the next Sanctuary, guided by Stina.
The Sanctuary awaits. Will the protagonist, Iori, Zash, Stina, Musoh, and Lara succeed and continue on with the Swordsman of Salvation quest—or does their journey end here?
The sealed door in the basement of the Black Iron Palace has suddenly opened. The party, wondering if it has anything to do with the Swordsman of Salvation quest, heads inside...
A demon has suddenly appeared in the depths of the Black Iron Palace. The party, wondering if it has anything to do with the Swordsman of Salvation quest, resolves to face this mysterious new adversary... *Gather keystones to strengthen yourself before taking on the challenge.
The Beater, Kirito, asks the protagonist for help with a quest. The request, of course, is accepted.
The protagonist accepts another request from Kirito, and they go off together in pursuit of a monster.
Kirito asks for help a third time—yet the target this time appears particularly tough. The pair head out to slay a monster that has been attacking merchants.
The protagonist receives a request from Asuna to gather materials for weapon upgrades, and the two head out into the field to begin their search.
Asuna asks for help with another gathering mission. The protagonist accepts, and they head to the objective together.
Asuna asks the protagonist for help gathering materials a third time. However, compared to the previous two requests, the difficulty seems much higher. The protagonist accepts and joins Asuna out in the field.
In order to help out the owner of the restaurant, the Snowy Thrush, Agil recruits the protagonist to help search for Glowing Meat.
Agil again asks the protagonist for help gathering ingredients for the Snowy Thrush. They head out into the field together.
Agil, with a grave look on his face, asks the protagonist for help a third time. Unsurprisingly, it again has something to do with the Snowy Thrush...
Silica asks the protagonist to help exterminate some monsters. A deal is struck, and the pair heads out to the quest area.
The protagonist accepts another monster extermination request from Silica. It seems to be a continuation of the previous quest...
The protagonist has tried to help Silica multiple times now, but to no luck. This time, however, she seems to have figured something out about the giant monster sightings she's been tasked with investigating. The protagonist joins Silica to finish the quest—once and for all.
Lisbeth asks the protagonist for help with a quest—an assignment from the head of a large trading company. The protagonist readily agrees to help.
Lisbeth still appears to be working on the questline from last time. It looks like it's getting quite tough, and this stage requires her to exterminate some monsters. Lisbeth convinces the protagonist to help once again.
The company's unreasonably lengthy quest is nearly over. Lisbeth asks the protagonist for help once again, and they oblige.
The protagonist runs into the player named Klein in town, who seems quite panicked. He asks the protagonist to come with him to meet someone. The protagonist accepts and tags along.
Klein has agreed to collect items for Cecilia, an NPC to whom he has also lent money. The protagonist agrees to help the hapless romantic, and together they head out into the field.
The NPC Cecilia has gone missing. The protagonists talks to Klein, who is desperate to find her, and agrees to lend a hand.
There is an ancient device located deep in the hills known as the "Heaven's Rift." Find it and report back to me with the details. Mayhap your overworlder tools will lead you to it? [Noble Scholar]
I fancy myself an explorer, but I'm a bit clumsy and tend to lose a lot of valuable equipment. I even wound up dropping my most cherished belonging just the other day—my map! Please, could you explore those ruins and retrieve it for me? [Explorer]
That is no mere trinket, but a holy icon of grave importance to members of my congregation. Some days ago, while being transferred to another location, it was stolen by a godless band of sinners... Should you seek out its missing piece, my flock would consider it nothing short of a miracle. [Priest]
Turns out adventuring goods are all the rage these days. Well, we wanna strike while the iron's hot, so we're developing some slick new gear—and raking in the dough while we're at it. The job's simple: seek out and destroy monsters that drop the materials we need, then explore the surrounding area. [Chairman]
Not bad, eh? Thanks to your generous contributions to the Leone Trading Company, we're givin' you access to some of our bestselling gear. Now, don't tell me—you're looking for more work, right? Well, job this time's the same as the last. [Chairman]
Now that the next floor is accessible, our company is eager to expand our sales channels. Excuse my forwardness, but would you be willing to work with us again? [Merchant]
Looks like adventurers still have Col to burn. Well, I'm not one to let an opportunity go to waste, so I figure we need to develop some new gear and get in on the action. That's where you come in—I want you to do a survey of materials we plan to use for development. [Chairman]
Thank you very much for your efforts thus far. Unfortunately, the chairman is now bedridden by his illness, and we are searching for a monster from which the materials necessary for his cure can be extracted. Time is of the essence, and there is simply no one else I can turn to. [Merchant]
You have potential, stranger. Perhaps you would like to test your mettle. No time for questions—fell this beast and then return to me. [Mysterious Man]
I'm about to embark on an exciting new venture. It's going be a smash hit—I can feel it in my bones, my very marrow! That said, I need just a few more supplies to get it all off the ground... You'll help me procure some, won't you, my business-savvy friend? [Merchant]
You see, I've been conducting research on a set of ruins, but I'm having a difficult time finding a means of entry. Surely even a layman like you understands what it is I expect? [Noble Scholar]
Thank you—those supplies you brought me have my daughter on the mend. But she's been bedridden for so long, she can barely sit up... If only I had the right ingredients, I could make a Robust Elixir... [Farmer's Wife]
You're saying didn't take a single bite? And yet this succulent scent lingers upon you like a meaty perfume, scintillating the senses... Ah... Incredible... Please, I'm begging you—find me the source of this aroma! [Waitress]
While that may look like a mere mud stain, it's actually beast excrement! Not to brag, but I've been studying beasts for a number of years, so I know a thing or two on the subject of droppings. Speaking of which, I have a favor to ask: would you be able to find me a fresh sample? [Researcher]
I'd really like to get my mother a gift, her favorite flower, actually, but I just can't find it growing anywhere... Please, could you help me find one? [Farmer's Daughter]
It's as I feared... This feather is an ill-omen. The only way to prevent disaster is to eradicate the beast before it reaches its full power—and I have no doubt that destiny chose you to see it done. Will you accept this task and destroy the brute before calamity befalls us all? [Priest]
Now go and fetch my other vases. They make up my prized collection, but were stolen by vile monsters and spread far and wide. [Noble]
There're these beasties out roaming on the plains, you see, and I can't even step foot out there anymore! I even heard they've bred themselves a new leader! Perhaps you'd be willing to take it out for me? [Merchant]
That damned fool. What was so wrong with his life here that he felt the need to up and... Ah, you're strong, right? Please, avenge my brother's death. I'll pay you, of course. [Farmer]
So, story is these demi-humans made themselves a nest in some ruins up along the main road—we're dependin' on you to give them the boot. [Merchant]
It's said those flowers only grow in an area where a certain monster lives. Frankly, I'd love nothing more than to wrest a Sleeping Bag from that very beast! Will you help me? [Citizen]
Somehow things got even worse! I've been tasked with taking out monsters way more vicious and terrifying than the ones I asked you to get rid of! Ah, it's already time for my deployment... Listen, you wouldn't be open to taking care of some more monsters for me, would you? [Guard]
Alright! Like I mentioned before, you'll be taking out a bunch of monsters. Please, take care of them before I'm the one out there risking his hide! [Guard]
We're always on the lookout for those like you—capable sorts, warriors who can help us wipe out the beasts plaguing our streets. If you're skilled enough to carry around those bones, I'd say you qualify. So, how about it? [Farmer]
Alas, I've suffered a terrible leg injury, and fear I won't be able to make it to the duel. A pity. Might I ask you to act as my proxy, delivering this letter of forfeit in my stead? [Noble]
I'll get straight to the point—I've been having the same nightmare about being attacked by a monster every night. I talked to a priest, and he said the only way to make it stop is by hunting the beast down... So I'm begging you, adventurer—will you track down the creature that plagues my dreams and put it to sleep? [Citizen]
I've devoted my entire life to the extermination of a particular beast lord. But I've fallen ill, and my time's running out. I know it's a lot to ask, but could you find it in your heart to take it down in my stead? [Guard]
Elven relics and ruins are steeped in mystery. Only those with special qualities can find these sites—let alone approach them. That's why I'd like to ask you to venture into some elven ruins and give me a full report detailing what you find within. [Researcher]
I won't stand idly by while innocent lives are used as bargaining chips! But I'm also not one for frontier justice—we need hard evidence that we can use to bring this noble down in a court of law. I'd like you to head to this area and bring back the vase the noble had some monster steal. [Undercover Guard]
Consider this more of a personal request. I need you to pick up an item dropped by a particular creature. Looks like this illness is finally gettin' the better of me, and I'd like to go out with as few regrets as possible. [Chairman]
I'm an avid diarist—I've traveled far and wide, and recording every step of my journey. Reckless getaways and dangerous stunts have taken their toll, however, with my precious travelogue notebooks scattered to the winds. I'm sure you know what I'm getting at, but... could I trouble you to bring me back any notebooks you find during your travels? [Merchant]
My servant somehow thought it wise to rob my treasury and skip town. His pockets must have been brimming with shiny baubles. Maybe some monster with a love of trinkets took off with my treasure? Please, if nothing else, at least search for the Treasury Key. [Noble]
